The Last Play.
The football game is close,
Their score’s three, yours is two,
You’re sittin’ on the bench,
And Coach looks over at you,
He gives out a yell,
He calls your name,
He says, “get fired up”,
‘Cos you’re going in the game,
It’s the last play of the game,
And your team has the ball,
You’re going in for guard,
And you’re only five feet tall,
You look across the line,
At the defense guy,
He looks pretty big,
About six foot five,
You try to brace yourself,
Then someone says, “hike it”,
This guy breaks all your bones,
And the coach says, “you like it”,
You grab for him again,
But you miss him by an inch,
He sacks your quarterback,
And the rest of the season you’re sittin’ on the bench.

I Never Tho't.
Unpublished Works, © 1997, BillyPauleyJr.*
I Never Tho’t.
There’s a face,
It looks so familiar,
But ain’t it peculiar,
O’, I just can’t place it now,
Somewhere, some place,
I think I knew her,
Could’ve meant something to her,
O’, but I really don’t know how,
I was just a young boy living in that Texas town,
Lord knows, I got around,
But I didn’t always see,
O’, drinkin’ to forget, you can forget a lot,
Lord, I never tho’t,
She might remember me,
There’s a place,
It seems I’ve been thru’,
But I cannot get to,
O’, just to picture her, no,
And yet, her name,
I know I’ve sung it,
O’, but I couldn’t hum it,
Not to save my soul,
I was just a young boy living in that Texas town,
Lord knows, I got around,
But I didn’t always see,
O’, drinkin’ to forget, you can forget a lot,
Lord, I never tho’t,
She might remember me,
And I know it would be easier,
If I lied right now and said,
That the song was in my heart,
O’, and her face was in my head,
But to tell the truth,
I don’t remember her at all,
Not the way it stood then,
Not the way we let it fall,
O’, there’s a voice,
It sounds like it knows me,
It’s trying to show me,
A time that was my own,
I’m making a choice,
To sing that song again,
To get to know a friend,
O’, like I’ve never known,
I was just a young boy living in that Texas town,
Lord knows, I got around,
O’, but I was too blind to see,
And drinkin’ to forget, I sure forgot a lot,
Lord, I never tho’t,
She might remember me,
O’, she might remember me.

Your Willy Wonka.
Unpublished Works, © 2002, BillyPauleyJr.*
Your Willy Wonka.
I wanna be the chance you wish for,
When you least expect it to be,
I wanna be your Music Maker,
I wanna be your dreamer of dreams,
I wanna be your Veruca Salt,
And you know I want it now,
I wanna be your Oompa-Loompa,
And rescue you somehow,
I wanna be your Grandpa Joe,
I wanna be your Wonka bar,
I wanna be your Fizzy-Lifting Drink,
And take you way up, far,
I wanna be your friend Augustus,
And drink your river sweet,
I wanna shrink you down and keep you,
I wanna be your Mike TeeVee,
I wanna be your Gobstopper,
Everlasting in your world,
I wanna be your hsawaknoW,
I wanna be your Blueberry Girl,
I wanna be your Wonkavator,
And your Scrumpdidillyumptious too,
I wanna strike that and reverse it,
When things go wrong for you,
I wanna be your Golden Ticket,
And make you sing and dance,
I wanna be your Willy Wonka,
I wanna be your Candyman.

No More Reason To Cry.
Unpublished Works, © 1984, BillyPauleyJr.*
No More Reason To Cry.
In a little country town in Kentucky,
Where men work hard to see their dreams all die,
A girl with unknown beauty feels unlucky,
To live within the boundaries of her life,
She doesn’t even know what dawn is bringing,
She doesn’t even care to see the day,
She says it only brings another evening,
And evenings are just wasting her away,
So time goes on as if no one is caring,
Precious moments only fall to tears,
Should she have faith, or should she be so daring,
It’s all she’s had to take her thru’ the years,
O’, never give up,
Never lose your self-determination,
The beauty that you carry,
Will change your look on life,
Never stop,
You’ve got a brand new destination,
Save your tears,
‘Cos there’s no more reason to cry,
As the years go on a man has come to marry,
A man with dreams too far to ever reach,
And the burden of his dreams is hers to carry,
But she carries it well, for all Kentucky to see,
She sees the road to fortune getting longer,
And she’s aching with every step along the way,
Tho’ her feet are sore, she knows they’re getting stronger,
And she wonders if the journey’s worth the pain,
She knows someday she will have to stop forever,
And settle with the fact that she had tried,
Would it bother her to know that it’s all over,
Would it ease her mind to know it’s for a child,
O’, never give up,
Never lose your self-determination,
The beauty that you carry,
Will change your look on life,
Never stop,
You’ve got a brand new destination,
Save your tears,
‘Cos there’s no more reason to cry,
In a little country town in Kentucky,
Where painful hearts seem to live a longer life,
A lady there sees herself unlucky,
To live within the walls of her sacrifice,
She wishes somehow things could be so different,
But she knows it couldn’t be any other way,
She wanted so much more for the children,
And so much more was taken every day,
Well, the children grew into men and into women,
And yesterday was winding down the road,
Then a grandson came and bro’t her back to livin’,
The life that she had dreamed so long ago,
It goes to show ya now,
Never give up,
Never lose your self-determination,
The beauty that you carry,
Will change your look on life,
Never stop,
You’ve got a brand new destination,
Save your tears,

Midnight In Naples.
Unpublished Works, © 1997, BillyPauleyJr.*
Midnight In Naples.
It’s midnight in Naples,
My plane is touching down,
I didn’t want to leave you,
But I had to leave that town,
Her memory still exhausts me,
More than she will ever know,
At midnight in Naples,
Maybe now, it won’t,
Midnight in Naples,
With you on my mind,
My heart is feeling lonely,
Like that deep, blue Naples sky,
The stars are dim and empty,
Like that last time we touched,
Midnight in Naples,
O’, I’m missing you so much,
I’ve known you for awhile,
But I’ve never known you well,
Then one night alone with you,
O’, that’s when I fell,
But before I took that fall,
She hurt me, o' so much,
So, here I am, in Naples,
Missing you, my love,
Midnight in Naples,
With you on my mind,
My heart is feeling lonely,
Like that deep, blue Naples sky,
The stars are dim and empty,
Like that last time we touched,
Midnight in Naples,
O’, I’m missing you so much,
The very tho’t of you now,
Makes me lonely and blue,
My heart is in the Naples sky,
When I’m not with you,
I’m not sorry I came here,
Just sorry I’m gone,
I tried to make things right,
By making another wrong,
Midnight in Naples,
With you on my mind,
My heart is feeling lonely,
Like that deep, blue Naples sky,
The stars are dim and empty,
Like that last time we touched,
Midnight in Naples,
O’, I’m missing you so much.

No Cure.
Unpublished Works, © 1991, BillyPauleyJr.*
No Cure.
When you were young,
When you were just a babe,
A fever came to you,
Nearly took you away,
But your mother so faithful,
Held you in her arms,
And she nursed you to health,
And she kept you from harm,
O’, but now,
I’m the fever you bear,
And your mother can’t save you,
From something so rare,
There’s no cure for my love,
There’s no hope, there’s no getting away,
You’d better watch what you do,
You’d better mean what you say,
There’s no cure for my love I’m afraid,
O’, at night,
Before you go to sleep,
You’ll get out of yourself,
And get down on your knees,
And you’ll pray for your soul,
And you’ll pray for your life,
And you’ll pray for the things,
That you wish for tonight,
As for me,
I will always be there,
When it comes to my love,
You just haven’t a prayer,
There’s no cure for my love,
There’s no hope, there’s no getting away,
You’d better watch what you do,
You’d better mean what you say,
There’s no cure for my love I’m afraid,
O’, and time,
Is the answer you’re told,
A place to hide,
All the hurt that you hold,
And in weeks,
Or in months or in some cases years,
You can face it again,
Without any fear,
But for me,
Time stands still,
You will never forget me,
No, you never will,
There’s no cure for my love,
There’s no hope, there’s no getting away,
You’d better watch what you do,
You’d better mean what you say,
There’s no cure for my love I’m afraid,
You’d better watch what you do,
You’d better watch how you pray,
There’s no cure for my love I must say,
There’s no cure.
