Who Is This Cinderella?

When I was just a child,
I heard a story told,
Where neglect would always flounder,
And goodness would turn gold,
But in an unforgiving world,
My hope is often pale,
To realize my deliverance,
Is just a fairy-tale,

Who is this Cinderella,
How did she make me believe,
That my heart would be rewarded,
That someone would rescue me ,
My glass slipper is half-broken,
In my unrequited dreams,
Who is this Cinderella,
How did she make me believe,

In my young adulthood,
I waited for the call,
To lift me from my ashes,
And take me to the ball,
But among the rats and pumpkin shells,
When the midnight hour was gone,
There was no fairy godmother,
To wave a magic wand,

Who is this Cinderella,
How did she make me believe,

Here now in my midlife,
The crisis that unfolds,
Is the flounder from neglect,
The absence of the gold,
Still I often wonder,
Was it life or was it me,
Who failed my happy ending,
And left me only dreams,

I am here,
And I miss you so much,
Sometimes I am scared,
When I’m waking up,
And I feel,
I should be there for you,
It is my place in life,
And I know it is true,

Did you talk to your mother,
Did you pray with your Father,
Did you shower your lover,
With the love they deserve,
Did you see your children,
Did you hug them and kiss them,

Last day on Earth,

You don’t see your end coming,
Ah, but who ever does,
Will you leave love regretting,
How you wish that it was,
Don’t wait for tomorrow,
For the things you’d do first,

Did you play with your puppy,

No one I know of could take your place,
You’re everything I could have,
Me, I’m just another face,
And not a very pretty one at that,
I would change my hair, change my clothes,
I would change my personality,
And I could do more things like those,
If you would just consider me,
And sometimes I wonder,
Why you stay with me,
When I don’t even like myself,
Rainbows would turn to thunder,
If you didn’t want me,
For me there’s no one else,
And I tell myself to get out of your way,
I know I’m just holding you down,
You don’t deserve to be bro’t to disgrace,
I’m a loser all around,
‘Cos I think you’re great,
And I’m out of place,
If I beg you not to leave,
And the ironical thing,
That all of this brings,
Is that you say the same thing to me.

Sometimes my life,
Without changing a thing,
Can overwhelm my soul,
With the trouble it brings,
It’s unpredictable,
I feel out of touch,
This spinning world,
Is often too much,
